If you’ve ever had a properly blocked ear, you’ll know it isn’t just inconvenient – it can genuinely throw your week off. Voices sound underwater. Your own voice booms inside your head. You feel slightly off-balance. Music loses half its colour, the TV needs subtitles and that itch deep in the ear canal just will not let up.
The good news is that most of the time, it’s nothing more than a build-up of wax. The better news is that, at Abeer’s Ear Health Clinic, we can usually have it sorted in under half an hour. We offer professional ear wax removal in Edgbaston at our Francis Road clinic and we’re a short hop from anywhere in Harborne, so help is genuinely just round the corner.
Ear wax – cerumen, if we’re being technical, isn’t a sign you’ve been doing something wrong. Quite the opposite. It’s there on purpose: trapping dust, slowing down bacteria, keeping the delicate skin of the ear canal moisturised and self-cleaning over time. For most people, most of the time, it manages itself.
It becomes a problem when it doesn’t shift. That can happen for all sorts of reasons:
When it builds up enough to block the canal, you’ll usually notice some combination of muffled hearing, a feeling of fullness or pressure, mild earache, ringing or buzzing, occasional dizziness or a quiet itch you can’t reach. Sometimes one ear pops back to normal after a shower and you assume it’s fine, then it goes again the next day. That’s usually a sign the wax has shifted but not cleared.

The old-fashioned way of clearing wax, syringing or ear irrigation with a jet of warm water – still works, but it isn’t ideal for everyone. It can be uncomfortable, it’s not suitable if you’ve had a perforated eardrum or certain ear surgeries and the clinician can’t see properly inside your ear while it’s happening.
Microsuction is the technique we use, and it’s now the standard of care at most private ear clinics and within ENT departments. Here’s what makes it different:
Most patients describe it as feeling slightly odd, a bit like a tiny vacuum near the ear — rather than uncomfortable. The relief afterwards is usually immediate.
There’s no shortage of places offering ear wax removal in Birmingham these days, pharmacies, walk-in centres, opticians, mobile services. So why do people choose a clinic specifically?
Two reasons, mostly: expertise and time.
Abeer is a fully qualified audiologist who graduated with First-Class Honours from Aston University and trained at Queen Elizabeth Hospital here in Birmingham. She has worked across both NHS and private audiology, treating adults and older patients and she’s used to dealing with stubborn wax, sensitive ears, hearing aid wearers and patients with prior ear conditions. If something looks unusual during the examination – an infection, a perforation, signs of something that needs onward referral, she’ll spot it and tell you.
We also give appointments a proper length. We’re not trying to push you out the door in ten minutes. If both ears need attention, we do both. If one ear is dry and crumbly while the other is soft and waxy, we adjust. If you have questions about ringing, dizziness or your hearing in general we have time for that conversation too.
Our main clinic is based at 78–79 Francis Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham B16 8SP, just off Hagley Road and easily reached from Five Ways, Calthorpe Estate, Edgbaston Village, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the University of Birmingham. If you live in B15, B16 or the surrounding streets, we’re likely your closest specialist ear care clinic.
We also offer appointments at House of Health, 90 Pope Street, B1 3BH in the Jewellery Quarter, which can be handier if you work in the city centre.
Same week appointments are usually available and we keep a few slots aside each week for urgent cases, especially helpful when wax is causing pain or sudden hearing loss in one ear.
Harborne is about two miles from our Edgbaston clinic, typically a ten to fifteen minute drive depending on the time of day. Coming from Harborne High Street, Moor Pool, Court Oak, Quinton or Bearwood, you’ll find us straightforward to reach via Harborne Road or the Hagley Road corridor.
We see a steady stream of Harborne patients, including hearing aid wearers who need a regular wax check, parents bringing in teenagers with blocked ears after summer swimming and older patients who’ve been told by their GP that the NHS no longer routinely offers wax removal in this area. If that’s you, you’re not on your own, we’ll get you sorted quickly.
Here’s the honest, step-by-step version of what happens when you book in:
Most patients walk out hearing clearly for the first time in weeks. It’s genuinely one of the most satisfying appointments in audiology.
We keep our pricing transparent and reasonable. Please see our Fees page for current prices or give us a ring and we’ll tell you straight away.
Not always. If your wax is very dry or impacted a few days of olive oil drops can make removal quicker and more comfortable. We’re happy to advise over the phone when you book.
Yes — microsuction is one of the safer options if you’ve had perforations, grommets or ear surgery, because no water enters the canal. We’ll always check your history before we begin.
Yes. Most appointments cover both ears, and the price is usually the same whether one or both ears need clearing.
For most people, only when symptoms appear. Hearing aid wearers and people who produce a lot of wax may benefit from a check every six to twelve months. We give you tailored advice after your appointment.
If your ears feel blocked, your hearing has gone muffled, or you’ve simply not had your ears checked in years, get in touch. We’ll get you in quickly, sort it gently and have you back to hearing properly the same day.
